International applicant rejection findings
Why Are Applicants to International Remote Roles Rejected?
The rejection email can feel like a judgment on the résumé. In the data, the résumé was rarely the recorded reason.
The clearest finding
Basic fit appeared more often than résumé scoring did
Stated experience or availability accounted for 39% of coded outcomes. Résumé evaluation accounted for 8%. The recorded reason was usually not that someone looked unimpressive on paper. It was that the role requirements and the application did not line up.
What the outcomes showed
A rejection is often a mismatch before it is a verdict
The résumé was not the dominant filter
Low résumé evaluation represented 8% of coded outcomes. Experience, availability, communication, and technical readiness collectively appeared far more often.
Binary requirements appeared more often than deeper evaluation
A schedule conflict, employment constraint, experience mismatch, or required communication standard can make deeper evidence irrelevant. Clear role requirements prevent both sides from spending time on a match that cannot work.
Manual review remains a large part of the decision
Manual review accounted for 39% of coded outcomes. Structured screening can narrow the field, but judgment still decides many cases that do not fit a single rule.
Different evidence belongs at different stages
Eligibility belongs first. Résumé context belongs next. Role-specific evidence belongs before the final interview. Asking one signal to do every job makes the process less accurate, not more efficient.

What this report covers
This report summarizes 12,984 application rows with a coded rejection outcome from July 1, 2025 through August 28, 2026. The rows span 49 job postings and 14 named role families in Talented's international recruiting operation.
We grouped internal outcome codes into five broad categories. Each row represents an application, not necessarily a unique person. Hiring processes and required checks varied by role and changed during the observation period.
This is not a ranking of candidates, countries, or clients. Applicant identities, client-confidential results, acquisition sources, assessment prompts, scoring thresholds, and role-level cuts remain private.
