Office parties. Team building activities.
(I'm gonna be sick)
Ew culture, boring and corporate.
I know, right?
Throw together a couple SOP’s, couple parties and BOOM you have a culture.
Nah
That’s not quite the culture I am referring to.
I think of culture as ‘We want to get to the same place together’ (shared missions/values)
Everyone knows they are an essential piece of the puzzle.
The culture that comes from showing your team good leadership day after day.
But I don’t mistake this for a quick process. It’s a slow process that has taken me months, even years to build up.
As the leader I am the strongest source of that culture for my team. It all trickles down from me.
My actions and interactions with others exhibit this culture to the rest of the team.
It’s about how I treat other people.
How I act under pressure.
What my priorities are.
I believe that when you start leading a team, the culture is one of the most important things to focus on. It can take awhile to build up, so I would not save it for later.
It’s part of your leverage.
So how do you create a good culture?
Well, that could be a book in itself..
Some of the ways I create my culture are:
Talking with every member of my team as much as possible (some daily)
Learning about their personal life and what they care about outside of work
Showing my dedication to showing up every day to complete my tasks
Recognizing my team for their dedication and good work
Etc, etc.
This is especially relevant for those that hire and never even interact with their team.
And they wonder why their team isn't doing well!
A ship with no steering wheel.
As a leader, it's your calling to be that steering wheel for them.
You row when you have to, but that ship needs direction.
Go direct your ship!
